I passed through the Ebebebe bridge in Awka North LGA of Anambra State, a few days ago and noticed that a lake has formed on one side of the road. Out of curiosity, I stopped to closely examine this perplexing development. Behold, somebody bought the land on the opposite side and is filling it up. The person filled the bridge on his side in such a way that water no longer flows, causing an artificial lake on the other side. The video is attached.
While examining the development, I had cause to ask one of the villagers what was happening. According to him, the owner wants to fill the entire water channel and construct a narrow culvert for the stream, thus preparing the place for a future catastrophe.
When people act, one often questions their sense of propriety. Why, in an attempt to recover a few plots of land, would someone endanger the lives of a whole community? Does he have approval to do what he is doing? Did he carry out any feasibility study? What if uncontrollable coastal erosion develops in the future? What is the effect of that recklessness on the ecosystem? These are pertinent questions for the Government of Anambra State. We must stop any kind of recklessness in the state!
