The Enugu Timber Market Union has re-elected Mr. Ugochukwu Nwatu, as chairman for the second term.
The election was held on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at timber.
Nwatu scored 380 votes to defeat his closest rival, Mr. Pius Uchenna Ogasi, who polled 269 votes.
The election which took place in a very peaceful environment was adjudged free and fair.
The jubilant traders cheering on the new chairman, Mr. Nwatu.
The chairman in his acceptance speech, assured stakeholders of loyalty, pledging to sustain peace, unity and progress in the market.
He expressed gratitude to his supporters, urging them sustain the tempo while promising not to disappoint.
“I am committed to sustaining our efforts and expanding on what we have started, and I trust in your partnership in making this market an even better place,” he stated.
Nwatu thanked Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, for providing the enabling environment to operate within the state.
He equally thanked the Governor for the ongoing massive infrastructural development in the area and his effort to boost the economy of the state.
Nwatu equally extended his gratitude to the Chairman of Enugu South Local Government Council, Hon. Caleb Ani, for ensuring adequate security and sending a team to monitor the exercise.
He emphasized that the market leadership would continue to maintain good relationship with the council for the benefit of the traders and the community at large.
The LG team led by Comrade Duncan Okenwa, thanked the leadership of the market, the electoral officers, Evag. Edi Anyabunsi, Obinweke Ikechukwu, John Izuchukwu and Francis Ede, who worked hard to ensure that the exercise was peaceful.
Comrade Okenwa who spoke on behalf of the Council Chairman advise the new leadership to run an all inclusive governance and maintain peace.
Traders casting the ballots
New executive that emerged to steer the association towards new horizons of impact include: Emmanuel Ezeufo, Vice-chairman; Ifeanyi Okafor as secretary; and Ikechukwu Okorie as Assistant Secretary.
Others are, Nwochi Friday Samuel, Anthony Nnam as Public Relations Officer (PRO), Amaechi Onyia as Financial Secretary; Okafor Nnamdi as Chief Provost; and Kenneth Ozoude as Provost 2.
The new executive is set to drive the market’s growth and stability under Nwatu’s continued leadership for the next three years.
