Police Investigate Murder of Enugu LP Chieftain

LP senatorial candidate for Enugu East District, Mr Oyibo Chukwu

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) Enugu State Command, has launched an investigation into the killing of the Labour Party (LP) senatorial candidate for Enugu East District, in the Feb. 25, 2023 Presidential and National Assembly Elections, Mr. Oyibo Chukwu.

The incident happened at Amechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area, South-East Nigeria, on Feb. 22, 2023.

The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani, who ordered the manhunt for the killers, in a statement after visiting the scene of the attack, condemned the killings, describing it as unacceptable in a modern democracy.

Also in the statement issued by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, said that the Commissioner had also ordered the intensification of discreet investigations and manhunt of suspected killers.

This paper reports that in spite the manner they were Killed, security agencies were yet to apprehend the perpetrators of the heinous act.

The gunmen killed and set ablaze the politician and five of his supporters, who were with him in his vehicle.

The deceased with his opponents being Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Princess Ada Ogbu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to reports, manhunt was launched on March 6, 2023 to unmasked his killers and one Nwachukwu Chikezie Christian, a farmer and bricklayer was fingered.

Before his assassination, it was gathered that the LP candidate had hot argument with his 29 year old former worker, Nwachukwu who it was gathered, stormed his residence to demand payment of his wage in order to take care of his mother who was in the hospital.

It was further alleged that Nwachukwu had been asking for the payment of the money since December, 2022 and went to his house again mid January but was prevented by security personnel from accessing Oyibo.

This explains why Nwachukwu who was currently on the run was being alleged to have a hand in the death of the politician.

Regrettably, it is over eight months now, the police are yet to produce outcome of the investigation and had not apprehended anyone.
