Enugu State has taken bold steps to safeguard the well-being and rights of its children, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to combating child abuse. Through the Office of the First Lady, the state has launched various initiatives such as the Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention tour to schools in the 17 local government areas, to sensitize communities and schools about child abuse, encouraging the reporting of cases and swift action against perpetrators.
The state’s Child’s Rights and Responsibility Law (CRRL), aligned with the United Nations Convention on Child’s Rights, serves as a powerful tool in protecting children from harm. This legislation has enabled the Office of the First Lady to closely monitor abuse cases, ensuring that justice is served.
A recent example of the office’s swift action is the case of Mrs. Ada Ogbogu, who allegedly inflicted bodily harm on her three-year-old stepson. Under the office’s watchful eye, the perpetrator was remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings.
Mrs. Mbah has further reaffirmed Enugu State’s zero-tolerance policy for child abuse, stating, “The very thought of an innocent child suffering at the hands of an adult is reprehensible. We will not stand idly by while our children are harmed. The state’s commitment to protecting its children is steadfast, and those who perpetrate child abuse will face the full weight of the law.”
