He noted that Obollo-Afor market was a key commercial centre in Enugu State and had long been a vital source of livelihood for many.

“It has a big advantage for being strategically located at the border to the Northern part of Nigeria.

“However, over the years, the market has faced challenges such as poor infrastructure, inadequate sanitation facilities, and overcrowding.

“These issues have hindered its potential to serve as a thriving economic hub,” he explained

Aka recognisng the need for change, said he prioritised the market’s reorganisation as part of his administration’s commitment for sustainable development and improved living standards.

This, he said, was in line with the economic target of the state government to achieve a $30 billion Gross Domestic Product.

The Council Boss said the modernisations project includes several key initiatives designed to enhance the market’s functionality and appeal.

“These include the construction of roads, resurfacing of parks, designated parking and loading areas, relocation of unhealthy abattoir to a more hygienic areas, construction of modern toilets and improved drainage systems to address flooding during the rainy season.

“Additionally, the market will feature modern stalls with proper roofing, and water supply to create a more comfortable and hygienic environment for traders and shoppers.

“One of the standout features of the reorganisation is the introduction of a waste management system to ensure proper disposal of refuse and maintain cleanliness.

“This move is expected to significantly improve the market’s sanitation and reduce health risks associated with poor waste management,” he stressed.

He added that the project would include the establishment of security posts and the installation of surveillance cameras to enhance safety and prevent theft or other criminal activities.

The Chairman emphasised that the reorganisation of the market was not just about physical upgrades but also about creating an enabling environment for massive economic growth.

According to him, the project has been met with widespread approval from traders and residents, who have expressed optimism about the positive impact it will have on their businesses and the community at large.

“Many believe that the modernized market will attract more customers from various states, increase sales, and ultimately contribute to the economic development of Udenu.

“By transforming the market into a modern trading hub, my administration is not only addressing long-standing challenges but also laying the foundation for a brighter economic future for Udenu people.

“This initiative underscores the importance of proactive leadership in driving positive change and improving the quality of life for citizens,” Aka said.
