As the international community marks this year’s World Radio Day, Nigerians are encouraged to be environmentally friendly and shun harmful practices such as deforestation and indiscriminate bush burning which are detrimental to the ecosystem.
The theme for this year is, “Radio and Climate Change: A Powerful Tool for Climate Action”.
The Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council, Dr Emeka Odogwu, who spoke with correspondent in Awka, described radio as the best medium of mass communication.
He urged managers of radio stations to device more means of enlightening the public on the need to embrace tree planting and other environment friendly practices that will improve the ecosystem and curb climatic challengings confronting the world recently.
For the Managing Director, Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS, Mr Christopher Molokwu, the station would continue to promote healthy environmental practices through its programming, urging other stations to key into the initiative to make the world a better and more conducive place.
Another respondent, Comrade Justice Asiegbu, commended UNESCO for establishing such a day to recognize roles radio play in fostering dialogue, promoting peace, and enlightening diverse communities, including those in remote areas.
He encouraged those at the helm of affairs of radio outfits to come up with interesting programs to endear more people to the radio, adding that life would be worthless without radio.
Recall that the World Radio Day, celebrated every February 13, is an annual event established by UNESCO in 2011 to highlight the importance of radio as a powerful medium for information, education, and entertainment.
