In the early hours of Monday, a vehicle around Charlie Boy, Gbagada, Lagos State knocked down two female officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).According to an eyewitness identified as Sodiq, the two yet-to-be-identified women died on the spot.“It was a ghastly accident, two LAWMA women were just knocked down by a Sienna vehicle while they were carrying out their duty.“We don’t know what was wrong with the driver, he just drove straight here and hit the two women. It is such a pity.“The driver has been arrested and handed over to the police,” Sodiq narrated to Punch.Information Nigeria however learnt that the unidentified driver was attempting to evade of officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) at Oshodi-Gbagada expressway
The incident caused gridlock in the area as several motorists and commuters were trapped for hours.However, Jubril Gawat, spokesman to State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said that the expressway has been “cleared.”The Police also have since been deployed to the area to bring order.Reacting, LAWMA said in a statement that the street cleaners were hit by a “reckless driver, in the cause of discharging their lawful duties and rendering invaluable services to humanity around Gbagada axis when the reckless motorist ran over them.”Though in their account, the perpetrator had yet to be arrested.“LAWMA is working with security agencies to apprehend and prosecute the errant driver of the car, with vehicle registration number EPE 984 DV,” the statement read.
