The Enugu State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Mines Workers (NUMW) has been inaugurated with a call on the leadership to work together for the welfare of members.
The union equally inaugurated Awhum and Quarry branches.
NUMW is a strong union of mines workers affiliated to the Nigeria Labour Congress, to advocate for the needs of mines workers, especially in companies where employers are notorious for abuse of staff.
The Enugu State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Fabian Nwigbo, who performed the inauguration in Awhum, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, tasked them to abide by the ethics of their profession and work in unity to push the interest of members.
Comrade Nwigbo who went down memory lane to highlight the importance of the inauguration, advised them to maintain good working relationship with their employers for the progress of workers.
He cautioned them to avoid violence rather embrace dialogue especially while placing their demands, while pledging the support of the congress towards ensuring that their objectives were realised.
Earlier, the National President of NUMW, Comrade Hamza Mohammad, said the branch has been empowered to defend the rights and needs of mine workers, noting that they have been equipped to reap the benefits of unionising.
He said Enugu has been known for mining activities emphasizing that the inauguration would help put members in organized form to work for the interest of members while working in synergy with their employers.
“Enugu has a long history of mining, you should not see this opportunity as an avenue to cause trouble.”he cautioned”.
Also speaking, the State Chairman, NUMW, Comrade David Abuchi Okafor, urged cooperation of all stakeholders and with a view to improving members welfare and common good of the citizenry.
He pledged to abide by the constitution of the union and appealed to both the national body and state labour Congress to help them solve the enormous challenges of miners in the state.
Comrade Okafor pledged to work in synergy with the NLC and other organs of government to achieve fruitful and effective results that would propel economic growth and transformation of the union.
The inauguration attracted stakeholders including the General Secretary of Nigeria Union of Mine Workers, Vice President of the Union and the Secretary of NUJ Enugu State Council, Dame Ifeoma Amuta, while presentation of certificate of return to the new executive members both at state and branch levels formed highlights of the occasion.
