Nasarawa State University, Keffi, has rusticated 37 students for one academic session over their alleged involvement in “criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance of public peace, and cyber-stalking.”

Documents obtained by SaharaReporters reveal the students created a WhatsApp group to protest the university’s introduction of a third semester.

The university’s Senate approved their rustication at its 123rd Regular Meeting on October 31, 2024, following a review by the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.

A letter signed by the Registrar, Dr. Bala I. Ahmed, instructed the students to stay off campus unless authorized. They must return in the 2025/2026 academic session with their guardians and a letter of good conduct.

The university’s decision, which was communicated to key officials, has sparked debate among students and the public. Some argue the punishment is excessive, while others see it as necessary for maintaining order. The university emphasized its commitment to upholding discipline and academic integrity.
