Food Security: Enugu Lawmaker, Princess Ugwu Urges Residents To Embrace Modern Farming Methods

Princess Obiajulu Ugwu, Deputy Chief Whip, Enugu State House of Assembly, recently spearheaded a programme aimed at tackling food insecurity in the region.

The event, held in collaboration with the Enugu State Young Farmers Association (ENSYFA), showcased a united front in advocating for modern farming methods as a solution to the pressing issue of food insecurity.

Princess Ugwu’s impassioned address resonated deeply with participants, as she underscored the need for individuals to take proactive steps towards food self-sufficiency.

While emphasizing the importance of embracing modern farming techniques, Princess Ugwu urged participants to become active participants in cultivating their own food, stating, “If we must have gardens, we must become gardeners.”

Highlighting the prevalent reliance on external food sources, Princess Ugwu drew attention to the untapped potential for households to cultivate their own vegetables, even in limited-space environments, by encouraging the adoption of sack farming methods, she sought to empower communities to take control of their food production and reduce dependency on local markets.

Kenneth Eze, President, Enugu State Young Farmers Association, ENSYFA, echoed Princess Ugwu’s points, emphasizing that food security was a collective responsibility.

He stressed the importance of government intervention in providing essential resources to support agricultural initiatives, proposing the distribution of 20 sacks each of Yam, Pepper, Ugu, and Tomatoes seedlings to households across Enugu State.

The collaborative efforts of Princess Obiajulu Ugwu and ENSYFA received widespread praise for their innovative approach to addressing food insecurity.
