Gone Too Soon: Slain Agropreneur ‘Fish Magnet’ to Be Laid to Rest Amid Tears and Unanswered Questions
By Ifeanyi Ndukwe (Saint), Awka
It was a cold and heart-wrenching night on July 27, 2025, when news broke that Ifesinachi Martins Onyekesi, fondly known as Fish Magnet, had been gunned down by unknown assailants. The air was thick with shock. A bright light from Anambra’s agro space had been extinguished suddenly, and without prior notice or warning.
The 32-year-old CEO of Fish Magnet was a rising star in Nigeria’s agribusiness scene. Known for his innovative approach to fish farming, he had not only fed homes but also mentored dozens of young agro-entrepreneurs. His murder has left many in pain, and his absence, a void hard to fill.
Now, the family he left behind has released his final burial rites. And the mood is heavy.
According to an official statement signed by his father and family head, Mr. Fidelis Onyekesi, the burial programme is as follows:
Vigil Mass: Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at the family compound, Eziakpu Village, Ikenga, Aguata LGA, Anambra State.
Burial Mass: Thursday, August 28, 2025, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Ikenga, by 10:00 AM. Interment follows immediately at the family compound.
Thanksgiving Service: Sunday, August 31, 2025, also at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
These ceremonies are expected to draw friends, sympathisers, and stakeholders from across the country, many of whom are still trying to make sense of his gruesome death.
Fish Magnet’s killing joins a disturbing list of unresolved high-profile murders in the state. His death mirrors the mysterious and still-unsolved killings of Hon. Okey Di Okay and Justice Azuka, both members of the State House. Residents are calling it “a pattern of elimination”, and the cries for justice have only grown louder.
Security experts, youth leaders, and industry players have urged the Soludo Solution government to provide measures and address the escalating insecurity, calling for concrete actions and not just condolences.
More Than a Name: The Legacy of Fish Magnet!
Before his life was tragically cut short, Ifesinachi was preparing to expand Fish Magnet Farms to Enugu and Abakaliki, taking his innovative techniques in aquaculture to a wider population. Beyond business, he had personal dreams too. Sources close to him revealed he was planning to propose to his longtime partner before the end of the year.
In honour of his life and impact, a candlelight procession was held in his memory earlier this month. The procession was led by popular human rights advocate, VeryDarkMan, and attended by hundreds who chanted songs of justice and remembrance.
A Call to Remember and Act!
His friends and customers describe him as calm, visionary, and always willing to help others grow. To them, he was not just a businessman, but a beacon of hope in a society where youth struggle to thrive.
His death has shaken the agro community, left many dreams shattered, and exposed again the gaping wounds of insecurity across the country especially Anambra state.
But in his memory, perhaps, lies a wake-up call. A demand for a safer, just society where innovation and hope are not slain in their prime.
As the countdown to his final farewell begins, one truth echoes louder than ever: “Fish Magnet may be gone, but his legacy like a fish swims on.”
