Anambra State was thrown into public outcry following the viral emergence of a disturbing video depicting members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) being brutally assaulted by operatives allegedly linked to Operation Udo Ga-Achi in Oba, Idemili South LGA.
The footage, which surfaced on social media early Monday, shows uniformed security men dragging and assaulting Corps members in broad daylight, a grim and unacceptable display of power gone rogue.
Meanwhile, in a swift and decisive response, the Anambra State Government has condemned the incident in strong terms, describing it as a “clear violation of the purpose and code of conduct” governing the state’s grassroots security initiatives.
“Operation Udo Ga-Achi and Agunechemba were created out of necessity to safeguard Anambra people, not to intimidate or brutalize them,” a government spokesperson said in a statement issued Tuesday morning.
“These outfits were born from the Anambra Homeland Security Law 2025 to bring peace and order not terror.”
Since their formal deployment on January 18, 2025, both outfits had garnered praise for curbing local crimes and complementing the efforts of the Nigerian Police Force. Their presence had been particularly impactful in rural communities previously plagued by cultism and petty theft.
However, the Oba incident has cast a temporary shadow over their credibility, prompting the government to act swiftly.
Arrests have already been made, with several officers of the implicated unit now in custody. As at the time of writing this report, 8 of the personnels responsible have been sacked.
The statement reads: “We assure all NYSC members posted to Anambra that they are safe,”
“No youth serving their nation under our watch will be subjected to harassment or violence. Justice will not only be served, but seen to be served.”
Reports reaching our table also affirmed that the Anambra first lady, Dr Nonye Soludo has made an invitation to host her in the government house.
Recall that eyewitnesses in Oba confirm that the Corps members were attacked while returning from a community outreach initiative. Community leaders have since reached out to both the victims and government officials to assist with the investigation.
Security analysts are praising the government’s speedy response, citing it as an example of the administration’s commitment to transparency and youth protection.
The State Commissioner for Youth Empowerment is expected to visit the assaulted Corps members later this week, while psychological support is being arranged through the State Health Department.
Meanwhile, public confidence is being restored as fresh protocols are being reviewed for all security operatives to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
In the words of a Corps member currently serving in Awka: “This could have broken us, but knowing the government has our back gives us strength to keep serving.”
Anambra State remains one of the most NYSC-friendly states in southeastern Nigeria, with a long-standing reputation for peace, hospitality, and youth engagement.
