The Enugu State Police Command has successfully rescued a 20-year-old woman from a suspected transnational human trafficking ring and arrested 50-year-old Ibekwe Nkiru in connection with the crime.

According to preliminary investigations, the victim, a native of Abia State, was lured from her job in Aba with the promise of a lucrative employment opportunity in Senegal.

The offer, however, reportedly involved prostitution. On 16 January, the suspect allegedly took the young woman to a shrine in Alor-Agu Community, Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, where she was forced to swear an oath of allegiance to the trafficking syndicate before her planned relocation.

Police operatives of the Igbo-Eze South Division, acting swiftly on credible intelligence, moved to the location and successfully arrested the suspect while rescuing the victim.

The young woman has since been debriefed and reunited with her family. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate still at large.

In a statement, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, said, “The Enugu State Police Command remains committed to the fight against human trafficking, prostitution, and other related crimes.

We urge members of the public to provide timely and credible information to the police to help dismantle these dangerous networks. The safety and security of our citizens remain our top priority, and we will continue to take decisive action against all forms of criminality in the state.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Bitrus Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to ensure all individuals connected with the crime are apprehended and brought to justice.
