The Police in Enugu State have arrested a 25-year-old man, Chinecherem Ugwuagu, who allegedly disguised himself in a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), uniform to evade arrest after committing a robbery in Udi Local Government Area of the state.

The suspect was arrested on October 11, 2025, by operatives attached to the Safer Highway Patrol along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, according to a statement issued on Monday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe.

Recovered from the suspect were an imitation gun fashioned from a body lotion container wrapped with cloth, a Carter motorcycle, clothes, a bank ATM card, and other personal belongings reportedly stolen from the victim.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Ugwuagu had, earlier on the same day at about 8:00 a.m., broken into the residence of a victim at 9th Mile, Udi, where he used the fake gun to threaten and rob the victim of the recovered items. After the robbery, he allegedly wore the NYSC uniform to conceal his identity and avoid detection while escaping on the stolen motorcycle.

However, luck ran out on him when the vigilant police operatives on patrol became suspicious of his movements and intercepted him along the expressway. A search led to the discovery of the stolen items and the fake gun.

SP Ndukwe said the suspect would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations, adding that efforts were ongoing to determine if he was involved in other criminal activities within the area.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the operatives for their prompt and professional response, which led to the arrest and recovery.
