The Enugu State Police Command has arraigned a 41-year-old man, Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, over alleged cyberbullying and defamatory publication targeting the Secretary to the Enugu State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.

Ugwuanyi, who reportedly operates a Facebook account under the name “Sen Chijikem Ugwuanyi,” was brought before a Magistrate Court in Enugu on Tuesday.

According to the police, investigations showed that the defendant allegedly made a Facebook post on January 15, 2026, falsely attributing a controversial statement to the SSG.

The post claimed that Onyia had said, “Some people are meant to be used to win elections, while some are meant to be given appointments and political dividends,” and included the SSG’s photograph.

Police authorities said the suspect admitted to making the post but could not provide evidence that the SSG made the statement.

Following his arraignment, the court ordered that Ugwuanyi be remanded in a correctional facility. The case file has also been forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

In a statement, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Bitrus Giwa, cautioned social media users to act responsibly online. He warned against cyberbullying, stalking and the dissemination of defamatory content capable of inciting hatred or disrupting public peace.

The police spokesperson in the state, SP Daniel Ndukwe, reiterated that individuals found culpable of such offences would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
