On Sunday, 7th January 2023, the final match of the annual “Unity Cup” football tournament, organized by Onitsha Ex-Footballers in Diaspora (O.N.E.F.I.D.), concluded in a spectacular fashion at the Godwin Achebe Stadium in Fegge, Onitsha.

The tournament, a brainchild of the Onitsha Ex-Footballers in Diaspora (O.N.E.F.I.D.), is their heartfelt initiative to give back to the city where their football journeys commenced. While many members have found success abroad, either as active players or coaches, they united to bring this competition to Onitsha, aiming to unearth young talents and provide them opportunities to pursue football careers internationally.

Nkemakonam Olnationz Nwonwu, the chairman of the association, unavoidably absent, was aptly represented by his secretary, Jideofor Anusi. In an interview with our correspondent, Anusi expressed that the tournament is a means of contributing to society. He also called upon the state government and well-meaning Anambrarians to support in enhancing sports facilities at the Onitsha stadium, essential for nurturing the burgeoning talents on display.
The competition commenced with 16 teams, culminating in an exciting final between Mourinho FC and Michael FC. After a gripping 1:1 draw in regular time, Mourinho FC emerged victorious in a penalty shootout.

The final standings saw Mourinho FC clinching the top spot, followed by Michael FC in second place and Ozalla FC securing the third position.
Individual excellence was also recognized, with Chidera Michael from Ozalla FC awarded the highest goal scorer, Somadina Mmaduagwuna from Mourinho FC named the best goalkeeper, and Emeka Favour from Michael FC honored as the best player of the tournament.
This tournament not only showcased thrilling football but also underlined the commitment of the diaspora footballers to nurture local talent and enhance sporting infrastructure in Onitsha.
