Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has fixed the last Saturday of every January as Igbo Adoration and Thanksgiving Day, to be observed by Ndigbo at home and in the diaspora.
The decision was taken at the organisation’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on January 20, 2026, according to a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu.
The resolution followed a formal appeal by the Igbo College of Bishops, represented at the meeting by the Archbishop of the Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, Anglican Communion, Most Rev. David Onuoha, and the Archbishop of Enugu Province, Most Rev. Sosthenes Eze, alongside other clerics.
The clerics urged a review of an earlier decision of the Imeobi Ohanaeze meeting held in Enugu on December 23, 2025, which had proposed the last Sunday of January for the observance, citing spiritual considerations.
Consequently, the NEC approved the last Saturday of January, with a note that the Imeobi Ohanaeze would be formally briefed at its next meeting.
The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Sen. Azuta Mbata, said the day would serve as a platform for collective thanksgiving and reflection, noting that it provides an opportunity for Ndigbo to appreciate God’s grace despite decades of challenges.
Ohanaeze called on churches across Igbo land to observe the maiden edition of the event on Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
The organisation also urged Igbo communities worldwide to participate, describing the observance as a unifying spiritual initiative aimed at strengthening faith, unity and collective identity among Ndigbo.
