Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the attack on the convoy of Dr Chris Ngige, describing the incident as “shocking and unacceptable.”
Obi stated this on Friday during a visit to Ngige’s country home in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area, where he commiserated with the former governor and his family.
Obi expressed deep concern over the incident, particularly the killing of a woman at the scene, calling it “a painful reminder of the needless bloodshed our people continue to endure.”
He urged security agencies to intensify coordinated operations as the festive season draws near, noting that every citizen deserves the right to travel and live without fear.
Ngige, a former Minister of Labour and Employment, recounted the attack, explaining that his aides were returning from errands when they were ambushed around Umuoji by gunmen dressed in police and military uniforms. The attackers reportedly pursued the convoy, opened fire, killed a woman, and wounded his police orderly before making away with his rifle and uniforms.
Refuting rumours of his death, Ngige said, “As you can see, I’m alive; I’m not dead, so there should be no panic.”
He added that the assailants accused the policemen of “serving a zoo government,” a remark he found troubling and suggestive of an attempt to seize weapons and uniforms.
Ngige noted that he had briefed Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who assured him that security agencies would track down the perpetrators to prevent further threats to public safety.
While acknowledging that it was unclear whether he was specifically targeted, Ngige said his convoy was easily recognisable, as his pilot driver of 22 years is well known.
He further suggested that the attackers might have been targeting convoys with police escorts.
Commenting on broader security concerns, Ngige reiterated his long-standing position that the case of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu requires a political solution, citing worries about Kanu’s health and the need for a more comprehensive review.
Obi, after the visit, expressed gratitude for Ngige’s safety and extended condolences to the family of the slain woman.
He urged authorities to ensure justice and intensify efforts to prevent similar tragedies.
