The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Oyo State has arrested five individuals for alleged illegal mining.

The state’s NSCDC Commandant, Augustine Padonu, revealed that the suspects were caught with two trucks carrying about 60 tonnes of lithium powder.

The suspects were intercepted by NSCDC personnel at the Ibadan Toll Gate on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The minerals were reportedly loaded from Ilenla in Kishi, Oyo State, and were headed for sale in Ogun State.

Padonu noted that the suspects were operating without the necessary licenses and paperwork for mining, processing, and transportation.

The suspects will be charged in court once investigations are completed.

He also reaffirmed the NSCDC’s commitment to eliminating criminal activity in Oyo and urged the public to continue providing useful information to help maintain law and order.
