Senator Uche Ekwunife has strongly condemned the assault on Miss Jennifer Elobor, a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra State. She described the incident as a barbaric and inhumane act that represents a gross violation of the dignity and fundamental rights of a young Nigerian committed to serving her country.

The Senator emphasized that the treatment meted out to Miss Elobor by overzealous operatives not only undermines the very essence of law enforcement but also casts a shadow over the government’s responsibility to protect its citizens. She stressed that no society that claims to uphold justice and human rights should ever permit the dehumanization of its youths under the guise of enforcing the law.

Ekwunife acknowledged the swift intervention of the Anambra State Government, which ensured the arrest of those responsible, but she maintained that arrests alone are insufficient.

She insisted that justice must be pursued to its logical conclusion through diligent prosecution, not only to punish the offenders but also to send a strong message that such violations will never be tolerated. According to her, this is necessary to reassure young people across the country that their safety and dignity will always be protected by the state.

Speaking further, the Anambra APC deputy governorship candidate explained that the operatives involved should be promptly charged to court and prosecuted in accordance with the law. She also stressed the need for security agencies to undertake regular training and reorientation of their personnel to instill professionalism, respect for human rights, and operational restraint.

In her view, stronger internal mechanisms must be put in place within security institutions to ensure that officers who overstep their authority are quickly disciplined and sanctioned. Furthermore, she urged the Federal Government, working with NYSC authorities, to introduce additional safeguards that will guarantee corps members can serve their nation without fear of harassment or abuse.

Ekwunife expressed solidarity with Jennifer Elobor and her family, assuring them that the matter would not be brushed aside. She reaffirmed that young Nigerians who leave their homes to serve the country deserve protection and dignity, not victimization.

She stressed that the assault on Miss Elobor represents an attack on society as a whole, and debase of womanhood. She called on the public to unite in ensuring that such incidents never occur again.
