Nigeria’s newly introduced secondary school curriculum will, for the first time, feature modules on journalism, computer programming, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and fact-checking.

Dada Olusegun, Senior Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Social Media, disclosed the reforms, sharing excerpts from the yet-to-be-released curriculum document.

According to the document, journalism will now form part of the English Language module at the senior secondary level, while programming will be taught across both junior and senior classes. AI and robotics have been included under a newly created subject, Digital Literacy, for senior students.

The government said the reforms are designed to equip students with skills relevant to a technology-driven world while strengthening their capacity for critical thinking, creativity, and innovation.

At the junior secondary level, subjects will cover mathematics, English, integrated science, social studies, languages, creative arts, and physical education, alongside new digital literacy and coding modules such as internet research, Python basics, Scratch, and robotics kits.

For senior secondary students, the curriculum expands into advanced mathematics, sciences, and social sciences, with technology and innovation subjects introducing AI, robotics, cybersecurity, programming, and digital entrepreneurship. Journalism, fact-checking, and public speaking will also be taught under English and Communication.

Students will be expected to complete a final-year research project involving data collection, analysis, and defense. Education experts have described the overhaul as a step toward preparing Nigerian students for global competitiveness in the knowledge economy.
