The Chairman, Enugu South Local Government Area, Hon. Caleb Ani, has cleared the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) registration fees of over 300 students in secondary schools in the council.
The beneficiaries cut across public, mission and private schools in the 13 political wards in the council.
Speaking during the official ceremony of the distribution of cheques to the benefiting candidates at the council’s headquarters, Uwani, Ani said that the gesture was a fulfilment of his campaign promise to empower the people through education.
“This is one of the campaign promises we made to the citizens of Enugu South Local Government that we are going to pick interest in their affair as it concerns education, hence what we are doing today by paying for WAEC and JAMB of students that are drawn from various secondary schools within Enugu South.
“The payment is not just for the indigenes, but non-indigene because our governor is somebody that believes in equality and fairness and that is what we are doing here in Enugu South,” he said.

The Chairman noted that the gesture was to complement the effort of the state governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, who had revolutionised the education sector.
The Chairman advised parents and guardians to see education as a major investment in their children.
He reassured the people of his commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises, explaining that he was investing in education as “an educated society is a huge enabler in economic development.”
