The Coordinator, National Youth Solidarity for Good Governance, Rt. Hon. Dr Ejikeme Odumegwu, has hailed Gov. Peter Mbah’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as “a wise, credible and timely decision”.

Odumegwu gave the commendation while sending his congratulatory message to the governor through newsmen in Enugu on Tuesday.

According to him, the recent political developments in Enugu State are not strange as Enugu State has been the only state in the country that sustained being in Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 1999 till date.

Odumegwu, who served as Senior Special Assistant to the immediate past administration in the state, noted that the past governors of the state and leaders should be given kudos for sustaining the PDP.

He said that the past leaders of the PDP did not jump from one party to the other; rather, they remained faithful.

The PDP Chieftain said: “Discovering that the chances of belonging to the national string could only avail to our state governor, if he identifies with the ruling party – APC. That is why Gov. Mbah defected.

“I believe that that is a wise and timely decision for him; but it does not mean that the electorates in Enugu State are disenfranchised.

“Belonging to a particular political party does not determine the people’s interest at the polling units.

“We all hail our governor for belonging to the ruling party in order to take Enugu State to the level other states find themselves.”

Odumegwu, who is a staunch PDP foundation member, urged the electoral umpire to ensure votes count during 2027 general election notwithstanding where one belongs or the interest one represents “since Nigeria has not been declared a one party state”.

“As far as Enugu State and her people are concerned; we still sympathise and identify with other political parties where they are run democratically and in line with the electoral laws.

“The governor has moved with his own interest groups to the APC; which does not mean that many people are not left and still in the PDP.

“So, one party state situation does not exist in Enugu State.PDP and other political parties are alive and striving in Enugu State.

“It can be likened to a scenario of having the reign of a religious group in a particular area . This does not suggest that there are no other religious groups existing,” he said.

The statesman said that “PDP remains strong”, adding: “It is left for the people to go for the better option, which is meant to fulfill their hopes and aspirations”.

“In a nutshell, the Governor of Enugu State has done well,” he added.
