Enugu Gov’t Unveils Teachers’ Manual For Basic Education, Reaffirms Commitment To Achieving SDGs

Enugu State Government has unveiled the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Integration Manual for Basic Education titled “Integrating the Sustainable Development Goals into Basic Education through Experiential Learning Teacher’s Guide,” reaffirming Governor Peter Mbah’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Goals by the year 2030.

This was made known during the Symposium/Book presentation organised by the SDGs office to mark the 2025 Global Goals Week celebration in Enugu State.

Speaking shortly after unveiling the book co-authored by the SDG Focal Person, Mrs Onyinye Akubuilo-Okpalanma and Prof. Dorothy Akubuilo, an expert in curriculum and instruction, Faculty of Educational Foundations, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, (ESUT), in Enugu, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Chidiebere Onyia, lauded the efforts of the Authors and their thoughtfulness.

He said the contents of the book aligned with Governor Peter Mbah’s developmental programs in the state.

“The design of the development plans addresses each component of the sustainable development goals. What we witnessed today is one aspect of that which has to do with education and curriculum development,” Prof Onyia said.

He explained that the manual will strengthen the concept, (where, in their experiential learning module, teachers are able to have examples of activities, strengthen their contents, where learning in the classroom be ones exciting rather than what you had in the past which is more gigantic and the teacher shares and the student memorizes and writes in examination. “Now, it’s more experiential., that’s why the whole ideas sits on experiential learning”.

Prof Onyia further said that , “beyond these curriculum and education,, it.allows our students to look across areas like climate, agriculture. It’s trans- disciplinary. This is all in one that will allow the teacher to also bring in new things into the teaching and learning system in line with Governor Mbah’s module around developing Enugu state and aligning with the key indicators of the SDGs

He disclosed that Smart school model is built around equality, equity and justice

Speaking , the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on SDGs, Mrs Akubuilo – Okparanma said, the Manual for Basic Education was designed to assist educators embed the Sustainable Development Goals into classroom leaming, building up the consciousness of learners and equipping them with Global Citizenship Education (GCED)

She said “the observance of the global goals week is a reminder of our shared responsibility towards the Sustainable Development Goals popularly known as the Global Goals adopted by world leaders in 2015.

According to her, the Sustainable Development Goals represent a universal call to action to end poverty protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. The SDGs serve as a blueprint for building a more inclusive, peaceful, and sustainable world

The SDGs Focal person said this year’s Theme , “Catalyzing Action on the SDGs. The Enugu Story”, reflects both the commitment and progress of the Enugu state government to achieving the SDGs. “Specifically, we are beaming our searchlight on Sustainable Development Goals 2 (Zero Hunger). Goal 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing) Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 9 (Industry. Innovation and Infrastructure)

“Enugu State has not only embraced the SDGs but has localized them into actionable policies and initiatives that touch the lives of our people Our story is one of innovation, resilience, and collaboration. This story comes alive in the practical steps His Excellency. Dr. Peter Mbah has taken across different sectors”, she said.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on SDGs, said, the SDGs Integration Manual for Basic Education

is a strategic tool designed to assist educators embed the Sustainable Development Goals into classroom leaming, building up the consciousness of learners and equipping them with Global Citizenship Education (GCED)

” This manual empowers teachers to inspire the next generation of Global citizens, ensuring that sustainability is not just a policy directive but a way of life for our young people”, Akubuilo-Okpalanma said.

In a Keynote address, the Chairman, House Committee on SDGs, Hon. Williams Amuka said the Enugu state House of Assembly has put in place everything to ensure the Governor put in practice all he has in his manifesto.

Telling the Enugu story, he enumerated some of projects executed by the state Government which included, construction of 260 Smart Green schools, construction of 260 Type Two Primary Health Care Centers, construction of 260 farm estates in 260 political wards in the state, roads , housing , provision of water, security, construction of 300- bed Enugu International hospital, provision of portable water in 180 days of office.

Others are construction of bus terminals, installation of CCTV cameras in different parts of the state, launching of Enugu Air , CNG buses among others cutting across all the sectors.

Reviewing the book, the Book Reviewer Prof Grace Oforma , said the Authors created awareness of SDGs for teachers to infused the SDGs in schools .

” The Authors want to catch them young. The strength of the book lies on the simple language. They employed a lot of illustrations and examples They employed visuals representing the 17 development goals”, she said.

Prof Offorma recommended the book to all teachers. She suggested that workshops be organised to train teachers on how to use the book.

The event featured panel of discussants, the Special Adviser to the Governor on health, Dr. Yomi Jaiye, the Director ,Smart Green schools and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Innovation, Dr. Chinyere Onyisi and the Senior Special Assistant on Transport, Mrs Ify Ugonabo. Each of them spoke on the achievements of their sectors.
