The Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ENSPHCDA) has unveiled Dr. Dennis Onyia Memorial Healthcare Centre at Udeji Amechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Council Area.
Dr. Onyia was former Chief Medical Officer (CMD) Department of Internal Medicine, Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) Parklane.
Dr. Ifeyinwa Ani-Osheku, Executive Secretary, ENSPHCDA, explained during the event in Amechi that the facility would provide comfortable space for residents to access quality healthcare services.
Ani-Osheku explained that the health centre was named after late Dr. Onyia in honour of his legacy of excellence, professionalism in medicine and philanthropy.
She said provision of quality healthcare infrastructure is very crucial to Dr. Peter Mbah-Administration, urging residents especially women to make good use of the facility.

Earlier, the Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Prof Emmanuel Obi, reiterated the determination of the government to alleviate the healthcare burden on vulnerable communities.
This, Obi explained, was the reason government embarked on the construction of 260 Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the 260 wards in the state to provide quality and affordable healthcare services to the people.
He described the late Dr Dennis Onyia, as a dedicated, committed, and exemplary physician.
In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of Enugu South Local Government Council Area, Hon Caleb Ani, thanked the Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, for giving the council the opportunity to benefit more from his interventions in the primary health subsector.

He commended Onyia’s family for donating the land for the construction of the Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC).
Ani also eulogized late Dr Onyia enduring record of positive impacts, saying “having someone like him as a brother and father who during his lifetime devoted his whole life for charitable activities was legendary.
“Late Dr Dennis Onyia was a guru in the practice of medicine, a committed evangelist and a dedicated servant in the Lord’s vineyard, his legacies would continue to be fresh in my mind.”he said.
The LG boss promised to pay for the first 100 persons to visit the facility for any medical assistance, he also promised that the council would be responsible for the payment of salaries of the cleaners and security personnel in the center.
He encouraged residents to take advantage of the facilities in the hospital for better medical care
Speaking on behalf of the family, Dr Sam Onyia, the late Doctor’s younger brother, said the facility is more than a healthcare center “but a monument to resilience, and healing.”
He said that late Dr Dennis Onyia lived an exemplary life explaining that the hospital was named after him, for his commitment to quality healthcare.
“He is being immortalized for been a unique specie of the human personality- a philanthropist per excellence, a guru in the practice of medicine, a committed evangelist and a dedicated servant in the Lord’s vineyard.”he said.
The event was marked with thanksgiving service at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church Amechi Awkunanaw which was organized by his family in remembrance of the late physician.
Dignitaries at the event include Prof. Mike Onyia and late Dr Dennis Onyia’s brother Pete who read recitations, brief testimonies on the legacies of the late physician.

Others are Hon. Monday Eneh, former Chairman, Enugu South Local Government, Prof. Paschal Okorie, former Accountant-General of Enugu State, Hon. And John Egbo, Leader, Enugu South Legislative Arm.

Late Dr. Dennis Ugodinma Onyia during his lifetime devoted his whole life for charity, impacting and supporting people both in his hometown and people around do him.
Dr Dennis Ugodinma Onyia was born 22nd November 1958 into the family of a distinguished community leader and Customary Court Registrar under the defunct Nkanu County Council.
