The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has commenced the second phase of its free prepaid meter distribution under “Tranche B” of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) programme.

EEDC’s Group Head, Corporate Communications, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, noting that the exercise targets unmetered customers on Band “A” feeders across the South-East.

According to him, 13,335 customers, including those of EEDC’s subsidiaries, will benefit in this phase, which began on November 2, 2025, with a Know Your Customer (KYC) validation exercise.

Ezeh stressed that the meters and their installation are completely free, warning customers not to make any payment to installers or engage in inducement. He urged customers to update their contact details at EEDC offices to ensure smooth deployment.

He recalled that 13,614 Band “A” customers were metered earlier in the year under Tranche A, adding that customers on Band “B” will be next as part of efforts to close the metering gap across the network.

Ezeh also hinted that another initiative, the Distribution Sector Recovery Project (DISREP), is underway to further expand access to prepaid meters.

He cautioned against meter bypass and energy theft, urging customers to report any illegal activity. For inquiries, customers can contact EEDC’s call centre on 0208 470 0100 or WhatsApp lines 0707 461 0095 and 0707 461 0088.

The MAF is a fund contributed by all distribution companies for the free procurement and deployment of prepaid meters, managed by NERC through an appointed fund manager.
