Anambra 2025: YPP Councillorship Candidates In Nnewi Join APC, Declare Support For Paul Chukwuma

The political momentum in Anambra State continues to tilt in favour of Sir Paul Chukwuma, former Young Progressives Party (YPP) councillorship candidates in Nnewi North LGA have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and declared their support for Chukwuma’s governorship ambition.

The former YPP members, who contested in the controversial September 2023 Anambra LGA elections, cited Chukwuma’s leadership capacity and vision for the state as their reason for joining the APC ahead of the party’s governorship primary election on April 6.

Among the defectors are prominent figures such as Hon. Amobi Okonkwo, former YPP candidate for Otolo Nnewi Ward 1 and Senior Special Assistant to Senator Ifeanyi Ubah on Persons with Special Needs, and Hon. Chigbo Uzor, YPP secretary in Nnewi North LGA and former candidate for Otolo Nnewi Ward 2. Others include Hon. Ugochukwu Ofodile (Otolo Nnewi Ward 3), Hon. Izuchukwu John Uzochukwu (Uruagu Nnewi Ward 1), Hon. Nonso Ojukwu (Uruagu Ward 2), Hon. Chidiebere Esione (Uruagu Ward 3), Hon. Uzochukwu Chukwuma (Nnewichi Nnewi Ward 1), Hon. Okanume Onyeka (Nnewichi Nnewi Ward 2), Hon. Ifenna Jinwa (Umudim Nnewi Ward 1), and Hon. Stanley Okeke (Umudim Nnewi Ward 2).

In a joint statement after their official reception into the APC, the defectors praised Chukwuma as a “round peg in a round hole” and the only aspirant capable of transforming Anambra State. They emphasised his “unbeatable capacity” to lead and described his candidacy as a beacon of hope for the state’s future.

The defectors were formally welcomed by Hon. Nonso Smart Okafor, former House of Assembly member for Nnewi North and the APC’s candidate for Nnewi North, South, and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency in the last general elections. Hon. Okafor, who also serves as the Nnewi North LGA coordinator for Chukwuma’s primary campaign, hailed the move as a sign of growing confidence in APC’s ability to lead Anambra.

The Nnewi North LGA Chairman of the APC, Prince Innocent Orizu, was also present at the event, alongside several key stakeholders and ward chairmen who cheered the new entrants into the party.

With the APC gaining ground and Chukwuma’s popularity surging across the state, political analysts say the upcoming primary election on April 6 will be a decisive moment for the party and the future of Anambra politics.
