The Deputy Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, Senator Uche Ekwunife, has condemned in strong terms the brutal mob assault on two women, one of whom was reportedly pregnant, over allegations of theft.

Ekwunife, in a statement issued on Monday in Awka, expressed outrage over a viral video showing the women being stripped, beaten, and paraded naked by a mob, describing the incident as barbaric, dehumanising, and an affront to the rule of law.

She said: “This act of jungle justice is not only a gross violation of human dignity but a direct assault on the sanctity of womanhood, motherhood, and the rule of law. No grievance, however justified in the eyes of the perpetrators, can ever warrant such cruelty.”

The former lawmaker noted that the attack, particularly on a pregnant woman, was “gut-wrenching and constitutes an unpardonable crime against humanity.”

Ekwunife lamented that mob actions continue to thrive despite clear provisions of the law, warning that such behaviour undermines state authority, erodes public confidence in law enforcement, and perpetuates a culture of lawlessness.

She, therefore, called on the Inspector-General of Police to order an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident, identify all those involved, and ensure they face the full weight of the law.

While sympathising with the victims, the APC chieftain urged the authorities to provide them with urgent medical attention, psychological support, and legal aid to help restore their dignity.

Ekwunife further appealed to Nigerians to shun mob justice and always channel grievances through lawful and constitutional means.

“We must build a society where justice is served in courtrooms, not on the streets,” she added.
