Fire Raises Over 500 Shops In Kano

The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed a massive fire outbreak that destroyed more than 500 shops at Shuwaki Market in Gari Local Government Area of Kano State.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Service’s spokesperson, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the incident occurred around 3:25 p.m of Wednesday.

The report said the control room received a distress call from Commander Abdulmalik Muhammed of the Gari Fire Station, alerting them to the blaze.

Firefighters from the Danbatta Fire Station were immediately deployed to the scene.

On arrival, they found that about 529 stalls out of roughly 1,000 temporary market stalls had already been completely destroyed by the fire. The affected area measured approximately 3,000 by 2,500 feet.

“The crew on duty from Danbatta fire station went to the scene of the incident, on their arrival, they found that, a market place of about 3000 x 2500 ft with about 1000 temporary stall, where about 529 temporary stall were burnt to the ground.”

Despite the scale of the fire, the fire crew managed to contain it and prevent further spread to other parts of the market. A fire jet from Comm 9 was used in the operation.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the blaze was caused by drunk individuals residing within the market premises, the statement added.
