Police Arrest Suspected Cable Vandals In Enugu

Police in Enugu State say they have arrested three suspected vandals for allegedly stealing high-voltage power cables along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway.

A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said the suspects identified as Chukwu Kelvin (25), Kenechukwu Ude (25), and Uche Nwankwo (28) were intercepted by operatives of the Distress Response Squad (DRS) on October 20, 2025, at about 4:48 a.m., during a routine stop-and-search operation.

Recovered from them were lengths of vandalized aluminum cables concealed with cassava leaves, a large cable cutter, two pairs of rubber gloves, a black bag containing clothes, and a white-coloured minibus with registration number ENU 450 XK, used in conveying the stolen materials.

During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to vandalizing the cables from electric poles along Ukete Road in Oduma community, Aninri Local Government Area, and were transporting them to the New Artisan Market in Enugu for sale.

According to the police, the suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to clamp down on vandals and other criminals sabotaging public infrastructure.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue to support the police in safeguarding critical installations and ensuring public safety.
