……as Afam Uzoegwu fights back after sudden contract termination
By lFEANYI NDUKWE (SAINT), ONITSHA
In a dramatic twist unfolding at the heart of Anambra State’s revenue collection system, Hon. Afam Uzoegwu, a respected contractor and community leader, has raised the alarm over what he describes as an unjust, unlawful termination of his revenue collection contract by the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS), led by Dr. Greg Ezeilo, FCA.
Uzoegwu, who was appointed as the official E-Ticket Agent for Old Road/Nkpor Central Motor Park in Idemili North Local Government Area, is now at the center of a storm involving contractual dispute, alleged sabotage, property destruction, and threats to public order — all within a state grappling with its revenue targets.
According to documents made available to Prolific Star Media, Hon. Afam Uzoegwu was officially engaged via a letter dated April 28, 2025, with a contract clearly stating his firm would manage revenue collection at the park from May 1 to December 31, 2025.
However, in what he calls a “shock move without just cause or due process,” Uzoegwu received a termination letter dated September 29, 2025, abruptly ending his engagement — just three months before its lawful expiry.
“No official reason was communicated,” Uzoegwu said.
“I have diligently fulfilled my obligations, made all payments, and committed resources to maintain order and compliance at the park.”
The real twist? Uzoegwu claims that Obinna Uzoegwu, a former AIRS contractor previously disengaged from the same park has not only been reintroduced by Dr. Ezeilo’s office but is allegedly operating under the guise of AC Uzoegwu Enterprise Nig Ltd with the support of armed individuals.
“I was recovering the park from a failed system of illegal operators and restoring order. Now, I’m being sabotaged by the same elements that previously lost credibility,” he stated.
He alleges that this re-entry of AC Uzoegwu Enterprise into park operations has resulted in aggression, violence, and the destruction of his personal properties including a hotel and school, with damages reportedly exceeding ₦150 million.
As at the time of reportage, the situation has escalated dangerously.
Hon. Uzoegwu recounts how his staff members were threatened at gunpoint, with one of their motorcycles valued at ₦1 million allegedly stolen during a confrontation with the rival group.
“I have four court cases pending on these incidents, and I’ve spent millions on security to protect lives and state revenue,” he said.
He insists this is more than a personal matter, stressing that it’s about transparency, legality, and protecting Anambra’s financial integrity.
Afam Uzoegwu’s appeal is clear and compelling. He is requesting the immediate reinstatement of his contract or a proper public explanation from AIRS regarding its termination.
He believes the silence from Dr. Ezeilo and the alleged covert actions suggest institutional inconsistency, which could undermine the confidence of the public in the state’s revenue system.
“Preventing me from completing my contract not only casts doubt on Anambra’s projected revenue figures, but it raises questions about governance, accountability, and fairness,” he added.
When Prolific Star TV visited the Anambra Revenue House in Awka seeking clarity, Dr. Ezeilo was reportedly unavailable. A reliable source within AIRS confided that the Chairman has been under intense pressure from multiple contractors alleging similar abrupt dismissals and irregularities.
“There’s growing tension, and the office is overwhelmed with disputes from aggrieved agents,” the source revealed, requesting anonymity.
Hon. Afam Uzoegwu has shown resilience, capacity, and commitment to lawful service delivery and is calling for justice, appealing to Anambra’s leadership to uphold due process and protect the credibility of its public institutions.
