EXCLUSIVE: Anambra 2025: Court Halts Moghalu’s Candidacy as Labour Party Crisis Boils Over

In a dramatic legal twist that has shaken the political landscape of Anambra State, a Federal High Court sitting in Enugu has barred Chief George Moghalu from parading himself as the Labour Party’s (LP) governorship candidate in the fast-approaching November 8, 2025 election.

The ruling seems to have thrown Moghalu’s political future into uncertainty and reshapes the battle within the Labour Party ahead of the high-stakes off-cycle poll.

The court, in a decisive ruling delivered under Suit No. FHC/AWK/CS/226/2025, granted an interim order restraining Moghalu from presenting himself as LP’s flagbearer. The judgment followed two ex parte motions filed by members of the party’s Interim State Executive Committee led by Hon. Peter Okoye and Jerry Nnubia, loyalists of the Senator Nenadi Usman-led national caretaker leadership.

Justice Nwaukwa Ukamaka, who presided over the case, ruled that only the Chukwunulu–Nnubia-led faction had the legal standing to produce a governorship candidate in Anambra under the Labour Party platform.

The basis for the court’s ruling stems from a landmark Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, which sacked Barr. Julius Abure as the LP National Chairman and handed over leadership to Senator Nenadi Usman. The apex court declared all acts carried out under Abure’s name including nominations and endorsements as nullities.

Since Moghalu’s candidacy emerged from the Abure faction, the court emphasized it lacks any legal grounding.

Meanwhile, legal and political analysts have described the ruling as a knockout punch to Moghalu’s ambition.

“You cannot build something on nothing and expect it to stand,” noted a political analyst in Awka.

“The law has spoken twice; first at the Supreme Court and now at the Federal High Court. The road ends here for Moghalu, legally speaking.”
