2027: APC Best Option for South East, Says Ex-Enugu Governor

Former Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, has endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term, describing the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the best political option for the South East ahead of the 2027 general election.

Mr Chime said he was part of the recent endorsement of Mr Tinubu by South East governors, APC leaders and stakeholders, adding that the president had performed creditably despite prevailing economic challenges.

He spoke on Tuesday in Udi, Enugu State, during the flag-off of the APC electronic membership registration exercise in Enugu West Senatorial District.

“I am part of the South East, so it goes without saying that I was part of the endorsement. That is our collective decision,” Mr Chime said. “The president has done well, given the circumstances.
What we are seeing in Nigeria is not peculiar; it is global and across Africa.”

The former governor expressed confidence that Mr Tinubu and the APC would secure significant support in the South East in 2027, saying critics of the party in the region would eventually “embrace reality.”

He added that he would speak more extensively on the 2027 election in the coming months.

Mr Chime also said his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after the 2015 election had been vindicated, arguing that the APC had become the dominant political force in Enugu State.

“APC is now the only party available in Enugu State. When we joined the party years ago, we saw what was coming,” he said, expressing optimism that the party would surpass its target of registering two million members in the state.

Chairmen of local government areas in Enugu West Senatorial District, including Udi, Aninri, Awgu, Ezeagu and Oji River, pledged to mobilise at the grassroots to ensure massive participation in the APC registration exercise.

Speaking on behalf of the council chairmen, the Udi Local Government Chairman, Hyginus Agu, said residents were satisfied with the performance of Governor Peter Mbah and were aligned with his political direction.

“The people are happy. As far as they are concerned, Governor Mbah represents their political choice, and they stand with him and President Tinubu,” Mr Agu said.

Last weekend, Governor Mbah, alongside Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru and other APC leaders from the South East, formally adopted Mr Tinubu as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
